Pakistan Agrees to Play India on February 15 After Requests from Sri Lanka and UAE

  • Save

Pakistan have agreed to play the highly anticipated match against India on February 15 in the T20 World Cup 2026, following diplomatic and cricketing efforts by Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and the ICC, according to media reports.

The decision comes after Pakistan had earlier announced a boycott of the match in solidarity with Bangladesh, triggering a major crisis for the ICC ahead of the tournament.

UAE Cricket Board Also Requests Review

After Sri Lanka, the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) formally approached the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), requesting a review of Pakistan’s decision not to play India.

Sources say the UAE board urged Pakistan to take a decision in the best interests of international cricket, highlighting the global significance of a Pakistan–India clash.

ICC Deputy Chairman Arrives in Lahore

The boycott issue escalated further when ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja arrived in Lahore, where high-level talks were held at the PCB headquarters.

The meeting included:

  • PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi
  • ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja
  • Bangladesh Cricket Board President Aminul Islam

Negotiations continued for over two and a half hours, with the meeting extended beyond the scheduled time due to the sensitivity of the matter.

What Was on the Agenda?

According to sources, the key agenda of the talks was:

  • Convincing Pakistan to play India in the T20 World Cup group match
  • Preventing disruption to the tournament
  • Resolving the controversy caused by Bangladesh’s exclusion

Bangladesh Controversy Behind the Crisis

The crisis began when Bangladesh expressed security concerns about playing matches in India during the T20 World Cup 2026 and requested a change of venues. The ICC rejected the request.

In protest, Bangladesh announced its withdrawal from the tournament. Instead of reopening talks, the ICC removed Bangladesh and included Scotland as a replacement.

Pakistan strongly criticized the decision, calling it a double standard, and announced a boycott of the India match in solidarity with Bangladesh — a move that shook the cricketing world.

Pakistan Thanks Bangladesh for Support

Bangladesh later thanked Pakistan for supporting its stance, further strengthening the diplomatic dimension of the issue within international cricket.

Why This Match Matters

A Pakistan vs India match is:

  • The biggest commercial fixture in world cricket
  • Crucial for broadcast revenue and sponsorships
  • Central to fan interest in the T20 World Cup

Pakistan’s agreement to play the match has eased immediate concerns but broader questions about ICC governance and fairness remain.
