As controversy over the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup continues, Pakistan may face severe penalties from the International Cricket Council (ICC) if it chooses to pull out of the tournament, multiple media outlets report.
The situation stems from tensions that began after Bangladesh was removed from the event for refusing to play matches in India and was replaced by Scotland. Pakistan criticized the decision, with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi calling the move unjust and stating that his team’s participation would depend on guidance from the Government of Pakistan.
According to reports, the ICC has warned that a withdrawal by Pakistan would lead to significant consequences, including:
- Suspension of all bilateral series with Pakistan
- Denial of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for foreign players wishing to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL)
- Exclusion from future Asia Cup tournaments
Officials familiar with the matter have said that canceling Pakistan’s participation could be seen as a breach of its participation agreement with the ICC. This would not only impact Pakistan’s international fixtures but could affect key revenue streams tied to ICC events.
Despite the ongoing dispute, Pakistan’s schedule in the T20 World Cup currently remains unchanged. The team is set to play its opening match against the Netherlands on February 7, followed by a high-profile clash against India on February 15 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The PCB maintains that any final decision on participation will come after discussions with the government once the prime minister returns to Pakistan.
